Jujutsu Kaisen is an excellent modern shounen anime series with many mysteries, plenty of great characters, and brilliant animation, so will there be a Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 announcement?
Without a second season, we will never see what Sukuna is planning to do is, or if Yuuji will find all the fingers and end him before that. There is also Gojou, and I wonder what will happen with him, considering the anime made him look unbeatable.
The only way to learn that without a sequel would be to read the manga, but this series benefits a lot from the beautiful OST, voice acting, and great animation. Studio MAPPA is doing an excellent job, so most people will wait for another season.
The problem is that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 didn’t get officially announced yet in 2021, and we don’t know what the chances are that another season of Jujutsu Kaisen will get green-lit.
So how can we figure out the probability that Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will get announced?
After analyzing a few hundred anime series in the past few years, I did discover the best method to determine if a sequel is likely or why it won’t get green-lit.
The method I use is 90% right, and it’s to look at the sales, source material, and popularity of a series. You can tell from that information if there are any plans to continue an anime.
I did the same analysis in this article for Jujutsu Kaisen, so if you want to know if there will be a second season for Jujutsu Kaisen, you should read this comprehensive article.
Now let me give you the information I found in 3 quick parts and tell you if you should expect Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 to get announced in 2021.
Let’s start with an in-depth look at the source material.
Part 1: Source Material Information For Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
Most new anime in 2021 are just adaptations from existing source material like manga, mobile games, visual novels, manhwa, or light novels.
For Jujutsu Kaisen, the source material is manga.
We are interested in how many manga volumes got released so far and if the story is still going on. An ongoing manga will always have a better chance of getting a sequel green-lit. There are exceptions like Overlord since there will be Overlord Season 4, yet there was no new volume released in 2 years.
We also need to look at how many manga volumes MAPPA used for the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime. There are sequels like No Game No Life Season 2 that didn’t happen yet because there was no source material left to use after the first season.
How many volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen are there?
There are currently 15 manga volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen released in Japan. There are also two light novel volumes, titled Soaring Summer and Returning Autumn and The Path of Roses at Dawn.
Is Jujutsu Kaisen still ongoing?
Jujutsu Kaisen is still an ongoing series in 2021. The last volume by the author Gege Akutami got released in Japan on March 4, 2021. Volume 16 of the manga will get released on June 4, 2021, most likely.
The author does write about four new manga volumes per year. That’s how it’s been for the past three years.
Which manga volumes does the anime of Jujutsu Kaisen cover?
The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen anime that aired in 2020 and continued to 2021 adapted volumes 1-7. The movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will adapt requel volume 0. That means manga volume 8 didn’t get yet adapted into anime format.
CONCLUSION FOR SOURCE MATERIAL: There are currently eight manga volumes left to get used for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, which should be enough for another two cour seasons. That means source material is currently not a problem for this series.
Part 2: Sales & Profit Information For Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
The primary purpose of anime adaptation is to generate profit for the production committee. If an anime failed to make enough profit from season one, there would be no reason to finance a sequel. Classroom of The Elite season 2 is a sequel that most likely isn’t happening because of low profit.
A two cour anime television series like Jujutsu Kaisen can cost up to 5 to 6,000,000 dollars to produce.
So in this section, we will look into information about the profit for the anime series. If it was big enough, I could see Jujutsu Kaisen getting complete adaptation like other popular franchises.
We are in times when big anime series are in demand by streaming companies, so no wonder sequels like this and Re:Zero season 3 have a much better chance of getting green-lit than a few years ago.
Jujutsu Kaisen Blu-Ray sales
The first Blu-ray volume of Jujutsu Kaisen sold around 26,000 copies in the first two weeks. Anything above 5,000 is excellent in 2021, so I don’t need to tell you that numbers for Jujutsu Kaisen are crazy.
Blu-Ray sales are just an extra these days since streaming took over most of the profit series did from disks. And big series like One Punch Man will be profitable only from that, so no wonder that One Punch Man season 3 will get green-lit.
Jujutsu Kaisen Manga sales
Volume 15 of Jujutsu Kaisen was released recently already sold more than 1,500,000 copies. All of the Jujutsu Kaisen volumes already sold more than 1,5 million copies, thanks to the insane boost from the anime. The sales for the whole year will most likely only be beaten by Demon Slayer this year.
Not many series can sell above 1,5m copies per volume. Even My Hero Academia is selling only around 600-700 in Japan. If you are curious, Demon Slayer is around 5m per volume and One Piece around 3-4m.
Jujutsu Kaisen Merchandise
Considering how well the manga and Blu-Ray are doing, it won’t surprise you, but the merch is crazy as well. There are already around 110 figmas and 6300 different pieces of merch made for this series. It’s been only seven months since the anime started for this series.
It’s already more than other popular series like Goblin Slayer or Made in Abyss that already have a sequel confirmed. And even with Goblin Slayer Season 2 or Made In Abyss Season 2, they won’t reach these numbers of merch, most likely even if they get full adaptations.
The above are just the main methods an anime adaptation can make a profit, but there are more ways anime makes money. I won’t post all of them here because the rest are usually only a small piece of the profits.
But here are a few examples for Jujutsu Kaisen – Soundtrack (OST), ending/openings songs sales, web radio, international license for Crunchyroll, streaming, various collaborations, and more.
CONCLUSION FOR SALES & PROFIT This series already made more money than most series do in a lifetime. It’s not doing Demon Slayer numbers, but it’s not that far away, and that’s crazy. In short, this series is hugely profitable for the production committee.
Part 3: Popularity Information For Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
We are interested in how well the series is doing during the first season in terms of popularity. Considering how much money it’s generating, I would be surprised if it wasn’t super popular.
Some anime series do peak in popularity even before ending. Is Jujutsu Kaisen one of them?
We will be looking at the official website, social media, Google trends, MyAnimeList rankings, copies in print, new merchandise. That will give us the answer, and I hope this series won’t end up as Noragami. Noragami Season 3 never happened in part because season 2 had a considerable drop in sales and popularity.
The official website for Jujutsu Kaisen is updated often in 2021 with news about the series and manga. The official Twitter account for this franchise with 900,000 followers is tweeting actively almost daily. That’s a lot of Twitter followers, it will most likely reach 1m before the end of the year.
The popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently at the maximum since the anime just ended recently. I will update this later because I’m curious how low it will drop after few months without an anime. The most popular series stay at around 20-30% of peak popularity.
Jujutsu Kaisen is ranked number 87 in popularity with around 940,000 members. At the current rate, it should reach the top 50 in a few months. Only the most hype and popular series will manage to do that in less than a year. Then you have series like Wise Man’s Grandchild that will never reach even the top 300, so it doesn’t look good for Wise Man’s Grandchild season 2.
Jujutsu Kaisen has 40.000.000 copies in print as of 2021/3. It already did overtake My Hero Academia in Japan since it has 30 million. I’m really curious if it can reach 75m before the end of the year, but I doubt that. There should be three more manga volumes released this year.
Too much merchandise to count is released every week, with many new figures planned for this series. That is normal for series that have running anime adaptation, but the sheer scale is surprising.
CONCLUSION FOR POPULARITY Jujutsu Kaisen is a super popular series that probably hasn’t peaked yet in popularity, but we will see how it will look in few months. Some people do compare it to Demon Slayer, but it’s nowhere near that series and nothing ever will at least in Japan.
Will There Be Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
I would say with 99% probability that there will be Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 announced after the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie they just announced. I will not be surprised if they tease or even announce another season in the movie credits.
If I had to take a guess, I would say the second season release date will be in 2023. If MAPPA is super busy, it could be even later, considering how many series they work on. I doubt it will be sooner than that
This article will get updated again next year, and we will see if something perhaps changed. In the meantime, you can check the anime-continue category if you are curious about the chances of some other series receiving a continuation.
I hope this article helped you understand the chances of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 getting announced in 2021.
